Mounarath Powell Dance presents “Transformative Visions” at the MP Dance Performance Space (8674 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91942) on May 2-4, 2024.
Please come join us for an exceptional showcase of dance celebrating the 15th anniversary of Mounarath Powell Dance’s (MPD) adult professional company; formerly known as Visionary Dance Theatre. It will be an exciting evening of high-octane, athletic, toe-tapping, and moving work that will be sure to entertain, touch your heart and move your soul.
An exciting new piece of work that will be highlighted in this concert is a collaboration with local and award-winning author, Michelle Smith, called Ode to Jesse. This work will highlight racism in America both historically and within our modern age. This work will be showcased in MPD’s fall concert, so come get a sneak peak of this piece now.
This 15th Anniversary celebration will also feature several incredible and well-renowned guest choreographers. Paul Koverman (12/5/1953 – 5/6/2010) will also have featured work in this concert. Koverman’s work, The Separation, is one of his best and well-known pieces from his illustrious dance career. Betzi Roe, who has been a staple in the San Diego dance community for over fifty years and an international dance artist, will be presenting new work in this concert called Noise. Lastly, MPD’s Master Teacher, Khamla Somphanh, will be re-staging one of her moving pieces called Friendly Burdens (2011) that she previously set on MPD’s very own Mickey Mounarath. This piece explores the multifaceted role a partner plays in our identity and how they contribute to shaping our experiences. Artistic Director, Spencer John Powell’s goal and vision has always been that of collaboration and community and this concert is no different.
This concert is a culmination of past work and collaboration with guest choreographers. Finally, Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will finish the evening off with an exuberant presentational work called Songs for Man-A-Rath, a celebration of love, family and dancing through life with Mickey Mounarath for the past three decades. Do not miss out on this wonderful night of dance and celebration!
