Mounarath Powell Dance presents “Cautionary Tales” at the MP Dance Performance Space (8674 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91942) on June 5-7, 2025 @ 7:30pm.
Join us for a new dance theater work written by Michelle Smith and choreographed by Spencer John Powell.
This evening-length performance reflects on our history in the United States and its relevance to 2025 by examining the turbulence of our political system and the negative impacts it has already had on many lives.

Beautifully crafted by award-winning author Michelle Smith, the work weaves together poignant prose and poetry with reflections on current ramifications of this Administration’s policies alongside cautionary tales for the future.

The MPD dancers fill the stage with dynamic movement combined with words and music, showcasing powerful performances that are sure to leave a lasting impression while provoking serious considerations about the future of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Michelle Smith has been published online in Decolonial Passage and in print editions of The Sun, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and the Monterey Herald, among others. She was selected for a top award in the 2023 Writer’s Digest poetry competition. She’s also received awards for her haiku as well as her prose.
