Mounarath Powell Dance presents “Voice” at the MP Dance Performance Space (8674 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91942) on April 3-11, 2026 @ 7:30pm.
Join us for Voice, an evening of dance that shifts the spotlight from the choreographer to the artists who embody the work. In this program, the focus moves from who created the steps to who inhabits them—elevating the dancers as the true voice of the performance. Through grounded presence and emotional depth, the company breathes life into each work.
Two works, carefully restored through our Archives Research Program, will be performed as part of our ongoing commitment to keep and preserve pieces that face video deterioration. From the Heart, a 1989 work, is an ode to female friendship and celebrates connection, resilience, and shared experience. Performed by Caley Hernandez, Yasmina Devos, Zayda Estrada, and Minaqua McPherson, the work shares a story of the strength of women in community. Hernandez and Devos are both featured as soloists, that anchor the work with emotional nuances and quiet strengths.
Chicago-based choreographer and former company member Tanya Lewis returns to create a new work on the company, bringing out the dancers’ voices with fresh perspective.
The company will present Afromations which centers its African American dancers in a celebration of self-love, identity, and history proving that group cohesion also has merit and power through individuality. The show also serves as a premiere of Spencer Powell’s newest work, Oil! inspired by Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel. Eva Anderson, who has returned to MPD after graduating from UC Davis, is highlighted in the work alongside DaVeon Johnson and Joseph Lister, who are new company members this season.
Together, Voice celebrates MPD dancers’ power, artistry, and range, offering a compelling reflection of the company’s dynamic presence.
