Visionary Dance Theatre presents our winter dance concert “The Taylor Smith Project” at the City Heights Performance Annex (3795 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA, 92105) on February 26th-27th @ 8pm.

The concert features some original musical arrangements and composition by VDT Composer Taylor Smith (Chair of Performing Arts, Associate Professor of Music at Cuyamaca College).

VDT Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will premiere a new work titled “Looking for Nina”.  This work will celebrate the High Priestess of Soul Nina Simone; singer/songwriter, classical pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles.  “Looking for Nina” is a work that will highlight some of Nina Simone’s greatest songs and will attempt to tell a story with each selected song.  This work is not a documentary of Simone’s life, but one that celebrates her and her music.  Featuring Kiona Daelyn (VSPA Dance Education Director, dancer with Astraeus Aerial Dance Theatre, and former dancer with Malashock Dance Company) as Nina Simone and Kidz Danz Kompany (KDK) member Zayda Estrada as Lisa Simone (Nina’s daughter), this work uses many dance forms such as Ballet, Jazz, and Modern to present a visual to her music.

Teaming up with VDT Composer Taylor Smith, VDT Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will also premiere another work titled “TSH Levels”.  This work portrays Powell’s struggles with Graves Disease and Hyperthyroidism.

VDT Assistant Artistic Director Ramon Montes will present a new work.  VDT dancers and dual choreographers Trixi Anne Agiao and Arthur Huang will also present a new work titled “Continuum”.

Come join VDT for an evening filled with dance, music, feeling, and thought.
